Wow Factor: 8/10

I have been a golf fan since the late 90s, but I have never seriously played. With the help of professionals, I think I am good enough to write an amazing app for it, and make a lot of money with it. No, I will just give out the ideas, and let others write an amazing app and make a lot of money. Read on to find out if I am joking.

There are two key elements in golf: driving and putting. Putting is not something you can improve dramatically with proper training. It’s kind of grinding, sensing and you get the feel of it down the road. Swing is something more methodical, technical. The way you do it can be changed, and makes big difference to your game. This is common no matter if you are a beginner, a pro or Tiger Woods. I have been watching Tiger Woods’ game for almost 20 years now. He had got his swing right early, but lost it about 10 years ago, never get it back. I think one lesson we have learned is: don’t change your swing until it is wrong. Shooting a little ball a mile away, with that kind of speed and it has to be straight, margin of error is too small.

Can HoloLens help Tiger Woods get his swing back? I am positive.

What a swing coach can do to a player is to tell you: which muscle is used as main driving force, which part of your body need to move in which direction, which part is not supposed to move at all. It’s like building a 4D sculpture. The problem is he can’t execute for you, and there is no accurate measurement to guide you in real time. If there is, it can do nothing to you within half a second. I have been thinking if someone builds a robot golfer, it would be unbeatable, because it can swing perfectly, and therefore always put the ball within 10 feet off the hole for an eagle. When the golfer is wearing a HoloLens, it’s possible that we can train the golfer to something close to a robotic swing, therefore being perfect every time.

I am not talking about wearing it in the game, which the PGA would ban entirely, I am talking about using it in the training. Here is how.

When the player is wearing the HoloLens, the app can detect his position in the course and the position of the ball. The player’s physical figure can be input before hand. The target distance can be set before hand too. With a flip of finger, a hologram of the driver’s moving trajectory is shown, including force applied along the way. It all leaves the player to follow that line, if you can follow the line in both the trajectory and the speed, you will land the ball to the target. Of course there is a wind factor, and a spinning factor need to be input too. Following the trajectory is easier, speed is hard, but it give you a chance to do the best you can potentially do. You just keep doing that day after day, until you get the reliable muscle memories. It is more like tracing in the letters in hand writing. I did that when I was young, and I did get a good handwriting.

For pros like Tiger Woods, their swings are close to perfection, so it’s a matter of finding a couple defects in their swings. Or forget about the techniques, if you can follow the hologram in perfection, you have a perfect swing. The theories are less important than results.

So, what if you can’t follow the hologram in perfection? If only thing you do is tracing the trajectory with the driver, then that’s easy. Everyone can do that. Hard thing to do is getting to the speed, and still follow the trajectory. This leaves some work for the coach. The coach can use a few other HoloLens around the player, and capture the action in 3D, so they can sit down watch the 3D holographic replay in slow motion to figure out what went wrong.

The development effort in generating the holographic trajectory is not hard, I believe some people already figured that out for us. Writing an app with basic features can be straightforward. But imagine how much money you can make with that: from Tiger Woods alone.

Holo-Game Room

Development Effort: 8/10
Business Value: 7/10
Wow Factor: 8/10

When we talk about playing games on HoloLens, we picture ourselves sitting on the couch, in font of Xbox, with Game controller in hands, HoloLens on head. Or sitting at the desk, in front a PC with HoloLens on. Nice and comfy. That’s the why businesses of all kinds game rooms in the neighbourhood are going down.

I go to Niagara Falls a couple of times every year, have been doing that since forever. Every time I stay, I always go to Midway Arcade game on Clifton Hill with family. It’s been a tradition. Every time, the room is packed up. That tells in some situations, like tourist places, game room is still a good business. Not just arcade, bowling is the same. But over the years, Haven’t seen a lot of changes, despite the video game industry had changed some much. Tourist places are different from home, you don’t bring Xbox with you. That’s why the old style game machines are still attractive. But I assume they can’t stay like that forever. If there is more interesting way to play games, they have to adopt it. If they don’t others will.

This is where HoloLens can help. A HoloLens powered game room is an empty room: carpet floored, walls covered with soft materials so players are fine when bumped on them. Everyone in the room with a HoloLens on. All the magic comes from the software in inside of the HoloLens. The room can be filled with any games the software allows. They can be arcade, bowling, hunted houses, or even hard core games. With any reasonable software implementation, it’s hard not to be amazing. So, why people want to come when can do the same at home? They don’t have a room this big and the experience will be different. Also some game are not supposed to be played alone. And sometimes, it’s just more amazing to play in the crowd. Last, the prize, that, for some, is what makes it exciting. Just like gambling, it’s always more exciting to play in casinos.

Almost all work is done on the software development side. For businesses, investment should be much lower than before. You don’t even need technicians to maintain the equipment you had before.

Happy Easter Holidays, everybody!

Holo-Advertising, what an unsexy thing to say! I know, but without advertising, our lives would be much worse off. We are watching 900 TV channels for free because of ads. The very existence of the Internet is largely because of ads. There is no such thing as a free lunch: you either pay for it, or get it free with ads.

If we can’t avoid it, why not make it enjoyable, or at least less intrusive. Well, HoloLens makes this a reality.

Many apps don’t need the full field of view, so a separate ads windows can be place beside the main content. This is much less annoying because it doesn’t take screen space (there is no screen to begin with), therefore, it doesn’t affect user experience. You can enlarge your main content as much as possible.

I think most of the ad controls for Windows will work with Holographic interface, with little to no changes. So the development effort is very low, for both advertising companies, like Smaato, and the app developers. Of course, ads can appear in 3D form, if it is attractive enough, user may want to play with it. You see, if you can make ads fun, that’s real business. I haven’t seen this happen on the current online advertising systems. Holographic gives us an opportunity to do that.

Some Business Ideas with HoloLens – (7) Holo-Escort

Holo-Escort

Development Effort: 8/10
Business Value: 8/10
Wow Factor: 9/10

People usually refer escort service as one specially kind of service. Here escort is literally escort, in general term. When we talk about holographic technology, everything applies.

Imagine you are on a business trip for a week or two, or just feel lonely, need company. You put on the HoloLens, fire up ABC Escort app. You can have a holographic someone on your couch instantly. I know it’s not real, but it looks real. You can talk to her/him the way to talk to a friend. She may sing or dance to you, or dance with you, and she can certainly keep you from boredom.

For the businesses who provide this kind of service, you may need an app, real people’s 3D models, also there need to be a real person behind each model, for chatting to be possible. The app need some serious work, but if there is a generic app, things can get easier.
